Money To Blow - Drake
Successful-Drake and Trey Songs
I Made It - Kevin Rudolph
On Top Of The World - TI
Liberation
I'm Like a Bird - Nelly Furtado
Free Fallin - John Mayer
Liberation- Outkast,Ericka Badu
Freedom- Akon
The songs that I chose for the Success aim were much easier to find because of the fact that so many songs are about making it in this world. I feel that the subject of rap songs are mostly about success. Songs like "Money to Blow" by Drake and On Top of the World by TI talk about the fact that these rappers are so rich that they can waste their money on anything. These songs boast about how far these artists have made it. I feel that the aim of Hinduism about Success is a more humble one to push its followers to succeed.
I chose songs about being free for the Liberation aim. I felt that "Freedom" by Akon really encompassed the aim of Liberation. It talks about being released from oppression and I thought that was a good representation of the aim of Hinduism. Also songs like the one by Nelly Furtado talks about how to be free and flying away to find their new place of belonging. Liberation by Outkast is also a great song that talks about being freed from oppression and other holds of life.
I agree with you that the Hindu aim of success seems to be a more humble one. This is probably since it's not the final aim and most would proceed to desire spiritual liberation after that point. Whereas in American culture, worldly success seems to be the final goal and there's nothing greater.
ReplyDeleteI like that you chose Nelly Furtados I'm Like a Bird as one of your liberation songs. It's a great song about freedom.
ReplyDeleteSuccess was definitely a far more prevalent theme than liberation. It was really easy to find songs on this topic because just about every hip hop or rap artist has a song about how they're #1 or above everyone else.
ReplyDeleteVery thoughtful choices, and insightful comments. I agree with the idea of freeing oneself from oppression, and I think it's interesting to think about the oppression of having to make money to be successful. The idea of "money to blow" is quite ludicrous when you think about it! American Pop music does lack humility. Great Post.
